Light Bulbs - Save Energy, Save Money

Author: Margarette Tustle

Light bulbs can actually save you money! You may not have thought that light bulbs fit in well with your energy-saving plan, but if you choose light bulbs wisely, you may be surprised at what you save on electricity and on long-term costs. Long-term costs, such as replacing light bulbs, can have an overall effect on your budget, as can the sky rocketing costs of energy. By doing some research and learning about the different kinds of bulbs, you will be able to choose wisely and find the best bulbs for you.

First, when looking at bulbs, make note of the types of bulbs available. The most popular and widely used light bulb is the incandescent bulb. The incandescent bulb was the very first type of lighting availble and was invented by Thomas Edison. These bulbs are generally very inexpensive, have a very short life span, and produce a yellow glow of light. They come in a variety of colors, styles, and different shapes. You can buy incandescent lights for ceiling fans, track lighting, tube shapes, and chandeliers. However, this type of light bulb is the least energy efficient.

Another type of bulb is the fluorescent light bulb, which is considered an energy saver. Fluorescent light bulbs come in both a tube shape and coiled shape for uses in businesses, office space, and a traditional socket for light bulbs. They are offered in almost as many colors as incandescent light bulbs, and can even mimic sunlight.

Halogen light bulbs are the most effective energy saving type of lighting for your home. Not only are they efficient, but they are very powerful. Halogen lighting produces 50% more light than that of an incandescent bulb, but uses the exact same amount of energy. Halogen lights also last as 3 times as long as the incandescent bulb. There are some dangers and/or warnings to adhere to when handling halogen bulbs. For one the oil on your skin will have a detrimental effect on the bulb if touched. Halogen lights also have a temperature of over 1,000 degrees when fully heated, so it is important to make sure you are not using them in a flammable situation.

As you shop for different light bulbs, think on a long-term basis. Focus on the overall savings of the cost of the bulb(s), rather than on the immediate selling price. Look for life expectancy, which is technically how long the light bulb can be lit, and wattage. Halogen light bulbs have a longer life than both incandescent light bulbs and fluorescent bulbs. Although you will initially pay a little bit more for a halogen lighting, it will certainly save you money long term. You will want consistency on wattage for all of the bulbs you buy. Make sure you know how much energy your outlet(s) produce. This will also affect the wattage of your bulbs.

As lighting technology continues to advance, you have more options to choose from in the way bulbs physically look, the tint of light they give off and the energy they use. Keep up to date as our world turns to more energy efficient solutions and you will benefit with cost saving ideas.
