Finding Pet Trainers

Author: Cathy Seiler

We all love our animals, but there is nothing worse than an undisciplined pet that doesn't listen, jumps on or nips at other people, or has picked up some bad habits that drive you crazy. The good news is that there are qualified pet trainers that can help you train your pet and help modify bad behavior habits if you are willing to invest a little bit of time and patience.

Pet trainers are people that work with you and your pet by providing training methods that are both humane and easily achievable through a little bit of work and repetition. They give you the methods and tips for basic obedience and training, which can make owning a pet a very enjoyable experience.

If your pet has specific behavior problems, then you will want to look for a person that is trained as, and specializes in, animal behavior. This differs a little bit from pet training, in that an animal behaviorist deals with specific problems that stem from a pets upbringing, environment, diet, or previous training. Typical behavioral problems might range from digging, chewing, problems with house training, or aggression. Most animal behaviorists are also pet trainers, but not all pet trainers are experienced with all facets of animal behavior.

If you are looking for a pet trainer, remember a few things: A good pet trainer will always use kind, humane training methods; will not use force, or employ shock collars, prong collars, or other harsh tools. Animals respond to kindness and repetition, not to fear, pain, or harsh words. A pet trainer should have experience with the type of pet you have, and should be glad to share their experience with you. Ask around your community for references, or ask potential pet trainers to supply them. There are no certification requirements for pet trainers, so you must do your homework to find one that you can work with.

If you are looking for an animal behaviorist, look for someone who has experience in this field. Your veterinarian may be able to provide you with some good references. A behaviorist will spend time with you and your pet, will ask about history and your pet's habits, and may observe your pet in it's home environment to determine causes for specific behaviors. Modifying behavior may take more time than obedience training, so be prepared to spend time implementing any suggestions made by the pet trainers or behaviorists.

Many pet trainers offer basic obedience classes that can be fun to attend. If you are not familiar with a particular trainer, take time to attend her classes before signing up, and observe how that trainer interacts both with the owners and pets. A good trainer will be patient; will take time with each student to ensure that techniques are done properly, and that both pet and owner understand what they are doing. If you do invest in obedience classes, make sure to practice the techniques at home. Repetition is the key for your pet to learn a new technique or habit.

Investing in your pet by training them in basic obedience or reaching out for help if you are experiencing behavioral issues can make all the difference in the world in the level of enjoyment you have with your pet. Pet trainers and behaviorists can help make some amazing adjustments and improvements in your pet's habits and interaction with other animals and people. Take time to invest in both your and your pets happiness and well being.
