Selecting the Perfect Cage for Your Bird

Author: C Lynn Beebe
One of the most important things to consider when you get a pet bird is the type of cage that will become its home. A bit of time spent choosing the perfect bird cage will ensure many happy years to come for you and your bird.

First, determine the amount of space you can allocate in your home for a bird cage. As to the question of size, get the largest bird cage you can both afford and accommodate in your home. The bigger the cage, the happier and healthier the bird will be. Of course, large cages are absolutely mandatory for bigger birds. And if you can manage, smaller birds will love having a large bird cage.

Be sure the shape of the cage complements your bird's activity level. Wide cages are often the best choice as they allow for ample flying room. Conversely, round cages are often much too small to allow for proper exercise.

Another important consideration is the quality of your new bird cage. While bird cages come in a wide variety of materials such as glass, wire, and acrylic; the best materials seem to be stainless steel and wrought iron. These materials are preferable due to their durability and lack of toxicity. Natural materials always prevail over man-made.

Cleaning your bird cage should also be a factor in choosing the perfect bird cage. A good bird cage will include a tray that pulls out like a drawer from the bottom of the cage. Such a design allows for an easy and quick cleaning solution. Your bird will be happier and content if its bird cage is cleaned on a regular basis.

The best way to make sure you find the bird cage that is perfect for your bird is to put yourself in the bird's shoes, so to speak. If you were a bird, you would want the largest, environmentally friendly and easy to maintain bird cage around. And, you'd want it to add value to your home's d'cor.

Keep these tips in mind and you'll have a happy bird and a happy household.
