Hurricanes and Parenting; What You Should Know

Author: Lance Winslow

If you are a parent you need to know that hurricanes can be psychologically traumatic for young children. Often they do not understand why they have to leave their home and then when you drive back they see all the devastation and they are very worried and it can be a traumatic event, which sticks in their minds their entire lives.

It is very important for the children to understand how hurricanes operate and perhaps you can even buy the picture book so they can understand hurricane storms and what they do. Often once a child understands how hurricanes form, why they occur and the damage they can do in advance they no longer see hurricanes as evil, but rather it prepares them for someday when they may need to deal with one and that it is a reality of life. This helps the children respect hurricanes and in later life will also prompt them to evacuate during mandatory evacuations that are prescribed by law.

This is something you as a parent can do to help your child deal with hurricanes in the future in a responsible way. No one else can do this but you. Sure, in schools they do teach about hurricanes, but you can teach your child in a loving away, which will not scare the ever living day lights out of them, but rather teach them to respect such extreme weather situations. I hope you will consider this in 2006 and be a good parent to your children.
