Battle Alcoholism With a Realistic Approach For Best Results

Author: Ray La Foy

Getting over an addiction is a lifelong process. The addict remains technically addicted for life. Inasmuch, it's important to ensure that rehabilitation services chosen are the best possible to give the addict the strongest chance of sticking with a program. In the case of alcohol, this can be particularly difficult. But as is the case in most addictions, the first step is for the addicted to admit there's a problem.

The best programs for alcoholics start out with a base that includes the alcoholic being willing to admit there is in fact a drinking problem. Alcoholism can take on many forms. Even the drinker who only has a few a day can still be an alcoholic. The true measure of the problem comes from the drinker him or herself. If he or she can't go without alcohol, there's a problem.

While there are detox programs that can help clean an alcoholic's system of the drug, the most successful programs start out with the alcoholic admitting the problem and acknowledging a strong desire to overcome it. Most addicts cannot conquer their addiction for someone else. They must have their own strong motivating reasons for facing the addiction.

Since alcohol can present with both physical and mental dependency, it's a good idea for those with serious problems to seek the help of a good program. The initial steps will involve "drying out" the alcoholic. This means weaning the body of its dependence on alcohol slowly. Sometimes drugs will be used to help the alcoholic over the humps, but these are generally short-term prescriptions that come from medical doctors adept at dealing with addictions.

Once the actual drying out has taken place, the next steps involve giving the addict the tools to fight the daily battle they will be presented with. Addiction is a lifelong condition. Even after years without drinking, an alcoholic is still an alcoholic. The turmoil within continues day after day with some days better than others.

This means for a person to conquer the problem, he or she must have a strong support system and a lot of will power to take each day one at a time. The smart alcoholic doesn't worry about what happens tomorrow, he or she is only concerned about getting through today without a drink.

Friends, family and other recovering addicts can all help the newly reformed addict by offering listening ears, support and lots of encouragement. Good programs seek to give the alcoholic a support system outside family. Oftentimes, it very much helps for an alcoholic to see and hear from people who have battled the disease successfully for years.

When looking for the best programs to treat alcoholism, look for those that are realistic and offer a program that comes in steps. An alcoholic cannot be "cured" in a day, in fact, there is no cure. An alcoholic can only go one day at a time with a solid set of tools and a support system to help him or her deal with the temptations. There are no guarantees when it comes to battling addiction. The best program acknowledge this and tries to treat the entire person and arm them with the tools they'll need to fight the battle once they're on their own.

Getting over alcohol addiction is a lifelong process. The battle can be won, however, if there's a strong willingness to do so and support is available to help keep the person on course.
