Algorfa ? The Little Village With a Big Welcome

Author: Needahand

Algorfa is another of the Vega Baja villages located in lush and fertile countryside on the banks of the Segura river. It has a mountainous backdrop but still enjoys panoramic views of the Mediterranean sea. Algorfa has a wonderful climate with over 300 days of sunshine each year, an average temperature in the region of 19 degrees centigrade and very little rainfall the Segura valley typically having the least rainfall in the whole of Spain. The economy of the village depends mostly on citrus farming primarily oranges and lemons, the trees of which stretch for miles around, lining every road. Algorfa is a typical Spanish village full of tradition and culture. It is a small village having a population of around 1,800.

Early artefacts show that there were settlers in the area of Algorfa as long ago as 3,000 BC. Human remains from the Neolithic period were found by a Jesuit archaeologist in 1903.

The municipality of Algorfa was founded by a privilege granted in 1328 by king Alfonso II and it became a part of the Kingdom of Valencia. The original village consisted of 15 homes housing 15 families. The privilege stood until after the War of Succession 1714 when it was withdrawn by by Felipe V. It was however restored before the end of the 18th century by Carlos IV at the request of the Marquesses of Algorfa. During these times Algorfa was an extensive agricultural area.

Today the village gives a warm welcome to visitors and the inhabitants are generous and friendly. The delightful town square houses the town hall, police station and the church and as with most Spanish villages it is the centre of the community the location of many festivals, fiestas and local activities, especially during the summer months. There are a few bars and restaurants but Algorfa is not a bustling place, more of a peaceful retreat.

For those with a little more energy Algorfa also boasts a recreation centre with sport facilities including tennis, swimming, squash and five-a-side football. There is also a popular Sunday market with plenty of bargains to be found.

Places of interest around Algorfa are the 19th century neo-gothic church (located just outside the village on the road to Benejuzar). Within walking distance of the town is the famous La Finca Golf Club with its Par 72, eighteen hole championship golf course, opened in 2001 and designed by Jose Gancedo.

Also worth a visit while in the area is the bustling town of Torrevieja with its lively promenade, impressive marina, its many shops and restaurants, including the brand new Habaneros shopping centre and its massive Friday market the biggest for 100 km and very busy.

Algorfa is a wonderful location for leisure pursuits especially walking and cyling and the nearest beaches are just a 15 minute drive away at Guardamar del Segura

To get to Algorfa you need to take the C3321 from Orihuela to Guardamar del Segura. If you are in the Costa Blanca area be sure to visit Algorfa the little village with a big welcome. Hasta luego en Algorfa.
